Meet Our Team
Jay Thorne - Founder/President
My name is Jay Thorne. I was raised in Tonganoxie, Kansas where I attended K-12th grades in the same district. After graduation I enlisted in the United States Army Reserves, basic training was at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina as a wheeled vehicle mechanic.
In January of 2003, our Reserve unit was activated to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. In April we were sent to Kuwait to transport tanks throughout Iraq. We returned home in May of 2004.
I attended Wyotech where I majored in Business and Diesel Technology.
In 2007 I decided to go active duty in the Army. We were sent to Ansbach, Germany 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. In 2009 I volunteered to be a door gunner in Blackhawk helicopters, we ended up being stationed all over Iraq to include Mosul, Balad and Basrah.
2011, I changed duty stations to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where I served another deployment and decided to get out of the Army in 2015.
2021, I founded the Veterans Outdoors Foundation.

Henry "Bert" Bertoncino –Vice President
I’m a military brat and always planned on joining the military as a kid. Because of the war in Iraq, I joined the army in 1990 on delayed entry since I was still in high school. I completed basic training and AIT as well as graduating the US Army ordinance school in 1991. I was sent to Fort Knox Ky for basic training and AIT. I served active duty from August 1991 to July 1995 and the army National Guard from then until 1999. Throughout my time in the military, I received several accommodations and certificates including combat lifesaver, wheeled vehicle mechanics, towing and recovery, and I earned the mountaineering and rappelling certification from Cheju do Island, South Korea. My time was primarily spent as a Bradley fighting vehicle systems mechanic but I did serve as an MP at the end of my time on active duty in Fort Benning. I joined the VOF as a member when it was founded in 2021. I’m excited to be the vice president of this fantastic organization and look forward to all the great things we will accomplish with and for the veterans and first responders of this great nation.

Suzi Santoyo - Treasurer
My name is Suzi Santoyo and I am the current Treasurer of Veterans Outdoors Foundation. I was born in Fort Leavenworth, KS at the Army Hospital. I am proud to say my parents are both Veterans of the US Navy. I have raised two outstanding young men whom I have loved every minute of the outdoors adventures we have had since the day they were born, almost 23 and 22 years ago. My passions/hobbies are horseback riding, camping, fishing, kayaking, hunting and competitive archery. I have given to many Veteran organizations for years not only because my family are Veterans but because all Active duty, Retired, those we have lost, and Veterans are so very important to me. Never forgotten and no hero ever left behind! I am honored to get to be a part of this organization! I love to see how much recognition and involvement VOF has gained since they started and looking forward to see VOF grow.
